eSIM for Italy: trains, cities and what your EU plan does not cover

All four Italian networks, EU rules, and a fair-use cap that runs out faster than the holiday does.

Italy is in the EU and on the euro, so the rules are the friendly ones. The catch is not the country; it is what your own operator allows you abroad.

Which networks you get

Our plans use TIM, Vodafone, Wind Tre and iliad — every network in the country. All are solid in the cities and along the main rail lines. Coverage thins in the mountains and in parts of the south, which is where having all four rather than one starts to matter.

The fair-use trap

Roam-like-at-home means your home plan works in Italy at home prices — up to your operator's fair-use cap. That cap is often a few gigabytes, not your whole allowance, and it is the reason people who thought they were covered come home to a bill.

Look up your own operator's roaming data cap before you decide you do not need anything. It is usually buried, and it is usually smaller than you think.

Trains

The fast lines between Rome, Florence and Milan run through long tunnels, and signal drops in every one of them. Download what you want to read before you board rather than expecting to stream the whole way.

How much data

A week of cities runs 3 to 5 GB: maps, museum bookings, messaging, the occasional video call. If you are uploading photos or working, plan for more.

Before you fly

Install at home, leave roaming off on the travel line until you land, then enable it for that line only and leave your own number on for calls.
